Maharashtra Day is celebrated on May 1st every year to commemorate the creation of the state of Maharashtra after the Bombay Reorganization Act of 1960 was enacted.

The law came into effect on May 1st, 1960, and thus this day is significant in the history of the state.

Maharashtra Day is a recognized state holiday that leads to the closure of significant government institutions, banks, schools and colleges.

To commemorate the culture and principles of their state’s inception, individuals often don traditional clothing.

• History:

Maharashtra had been a part of the Bombay Presidency, which covered a vast area, including present-day Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Karnataka, for over a century prior to the separation.

However, there was growing demand for a separate state for Marathi-speaking people, due to cultural and linguistic differences with Gujarat.

The movement for a separate state gained momentum in the 1950s, and after prolonged political negotiations, the Bombay Reorganization Act was passed in Parliament in April 1960.

The new state of Maharashtra was created out of the Marathi-speaking parts of Bombay Presidency, while Gujarat was established by merging the Gujarati-speaking areas.

• Significance:

Maharashtra Day is significant as it marks the birth of the state and celebrates the Marathi culture, language, and people.

The day is marked with cultural events, parades, and flag-hoisting ceremonies, and is a public holiday throughout the state.

It is an occasion for people to reflect on Maharashtra’s rich history, culture, and contributions to the nation.
